Port Tampa

The view from way, way, way, South of Gandy in Tampa, Florida. (So far south you can hear them chasing birds away from the runway at MacDill.)

What does a house cost down there?

I've been spending a lot of time out of town on business this winter and this time of year people seem to be particularly envious of a Tampa address. Some so want to escape where ever they are living now they start researching how to make a move to Tampa before employment or family ties bring them here. A recent visitor to the blog that covers all things Tampa,Sticks of Fire asked if a family could find a 3 bedroom 2 bath home for around $300,000.

So what does a house in Port Tampa cost? Wow, that is a really difficult question these days. A search of realtor.com for the 33616 zip code will include a lot of homes that aren't in Port Tampa proper, including Westshore Yacht Club. Here's the range I found after sorting through 187 listings:$179,900 will buy this three bedroom one bath home on a 50X100 ft lot. Built in 1900 it is on Fitzgerald just south of the Community Center.

There is no photo available for the 4 bedroom 4 bath $729,000 house going up on the far south end of Juanita. I don't think you can buy an insurable 3 bedroom 2 bath single family home in Port Tampa for under $375,000. Comment here if you can prove me wrong!

How about a bike lane for Interbay? With all the development on Interbay to include road work, it would seem to be a perfect time to start building a Bike Lane. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear DR Horton is adding a Bike Lane to their effort. Wouldn't want Tampa to drop out of the top ten most dangerous cities for cyclists!!!

I cannot believe the asking price for this house at 6828 S.Fitzgerald St is $179,900. When I spoke with a realtor more than a year ago, I was told this house is termite-ridden and, after 10 years of rentals, badly abused and would cost more to renovate than demolish. Too bad as this house, according to the last owner, was the home of one of the first PT city officials. It used to be a charmer and was on the first Port Tampa Promenade home tour.

John-good point. I plan on posting about Port Tampa streets and sidewalks soon. If ever a neighborhood had pedestrian/cyclist potential ours is it.

Anonymous-It is sad. This house by itself is not much to look at. But, there are many of its type in Port Tampa, and a couple other once popular styles. They add so much to the historic flavor of the neighborhood it is sad to see any of them in such a state.

IMHO an inventory of all pre-1950s buildings still standing in Port Tampa is very much needed. I know the "Historic District" status some sought last year seems to have died on the vine but some efforts to preserve what makes PTC unique seem in order. Otherwise the only thing we'll have is suburban style development with an in town address. Yuck.

We looked at a couple of houses in Port Tampa when we moved back here last fall. The cheapest we saw was new construction, three bedrooms, $340,000. Because Mark was deploying, we were interested only in homes that were move-in ready.
We both love the character of Port Tampa, but just couldn't swing it.
I wondered, too, about new development in the area, although that is what we were looking at. It always seems to be a double-edged sword - new construction can improve a neighborhood in so many ways, but take away from its character in so many ways, too.
